Tom Onslow-Cole To Drive Milltek Golf at Hockenheim Tuner GP 2013
British Touring Car Championship ace Tom Onslow-Cole may have already found impressive form in his Milltek-backed Passat CC touring car, but on the 24th and 25th May this year, the popular Surrey wheelman will try his hand at piloting the Milltek Time Attack-spec Golf 6 racecar at the prestigious Sport Auto Tuner GP event at Hockenheim in Germany.
As part of Milltek’s Time Attack campaign, the wide-bodied, KPM-prepared Golf is proving to be an effective weapon in the MSA-approved series, already knocking on the door of podium times despite still being in its ‘shakedown’ and development period. Onslow-Cole is in similarly good form, having managed to hustle his team HARD Passat CC to double podium finishes at the recent Thruxton round, despite that car also being just weeks into its life cycle. Can the two form the ultimate VW partnership at Hockenheim and really make an impression?
‘We’ll certainly give it a go!,’ smiled Onslow-Cole. ‘Because of the bespoke nature of the Golf’s spec, we’ll probably be classified in the ‘Extreme’ class at the Tuner GP, so we’ll doubtless up against some fairly eclectic machinery, but the car is quick, very nice to drive and unerringly consistent, so we could be in with a chance, particularly if the weather plays to the strengths of a FWD platform.’
Commenting on the event, Milltek UK managing director Phil Millington added, ‘It’s still very early in this car’s development cycle to say that we’re going to aim for a top five finish or anything like that, but with Tom, we know we have one of the best drivers in the sport, and the Golf might just surprise a few people. The ultimate reason for our visit is to have a little fun and get some invaluable set-up data with Tom at the helm to feed back into our Time Attack programme. It’s also another chance for our engineers to test our design ideology in the white heat of competition.’
Team Milltek will also be taking the Time Attack Club Class championship-winning Nissan GT-R of Richard Marshall, along with the man himself, to campaign in the same ‘Extreme’ class. The GT-R’s prodigious grip and grunt promises great things in the event, and it will be interesting to how the two cars compare. One thing’s for sure, the Milltek technicians are going to be kept busy all weekend!
With a crowd of some 30,000 spectators expected on the Saturday, the event always has a great atmosphere, with some epic performances guaranteed. Any and all friends of the Milltek 'family' will be made more than welcome in the teams' pit garage and Tom will be on hand to meet fans and sign autographs throughout the weekend. If you are attending the event, please make sure that you stop by and meet the team.
