Milltek Sport Tastes Sweet Success in Hungary 24 Hour Series
Performance Exhaust Manufacturer, Milltek Sport, were granted their ultimate wish for the final race of the 2014 24 Hour Series in Hungary this weekend (4th October) when they took the class win after a dominant display across the whole season in their VW Golf TDI Race Car.
Leading the team of drivers was BTCC star and long-term partner of Milltek, Tom Onslow-Cole. Tom and the rest of the Milltek Sport / KPM Racing team were delighted with the result. The victory is the second out of four races for the team in the 2014 24 Hours Series and completes a 100 per cent podium-finishing rate, which includes the grueling endurance races Dubai 24 Hours and Barcelona 24 Hours.
Like the 12 Hours of Mugello earlier in the year, the 12 Hours of Hungary went as smoothly as any endurance race could go. The team crossed the line six laps ahead of the second place car and suffered no issues throughout the entire race.
“You only have to look at the car at the end of a 12- or 24-hour race to see that it has been through a lot,” commented Onslow-Cole. “And, that’s just what you see on the outside. To take a standard production car and prepare it to withstand the demands of endurance racing without any failures is real testament to the team. The car is prepared to an exceptional standard and that’s what wins endurance races.
“Once again, the car didn’t miss a beat this weekend. In fact, it’s been fantastic all year.”
The Milltek Sport VW Golf is a standard production car that has an upgraded Milltek Sport exhaust system and wide-tracked racing body. KPM Racing worked very closely with Milltek Sport and Volkswagen to prepare the car at its base at Silverstone in the UK.
Onslow-Cole once again raced the 2.0-litre diesel machine alongside regular team-mate Paul White (GB), who is extremely experienced in long-distance racing and, at the other end of the scale, Jade Edwards (GB) who was making her 12-hour racing debut.
“Both Paul and Jade did a great job this weekend,” adds Onslow-Cole. “Jade made her 12-hour race debut and put in two strong two-hour long stints and Paul, who seemed to be jinxed with rain, did a great job in some challenging mixed weather conditions.”
Despite the heavy rain on the back of the circuit, the team made some good strategic calls to eliminate any unscheduled pitstops and ensure they maintained a good lead. At the end of the 12 hours, the team had not only won the D1 class but finished seventh overall, ahead of several cars from higher classes.
“I genuinely could not be happier,” commented KPM Racing team owner Kevin Poole. “We finished every race we entered and took a podium at each. To take another class win has really finished the season on a high.”
Milltek Sport equipped their Golf TDI race car with a standard off-the-shelf performance exhaust system that’s the same as those available for any customer to buy and fit to their own diesel Golfs.
“It’s our close working relationship and active participation in motorsport, from the British Touring Car Championship to 24H endurance racing, that gives our entire product range the edge in both performance and reliability.” commented Milltek Sport marketing manager Jon Nicholson “If our products can handle a full 12H session at the hands of some of the fastest racing drivers in the business you can be sure they won’t let you down”.
